FREESTYLE ETIQUETTE AND SAFETY RULES

1. Sign-in and pay for freestyle sessions BEFORE you enter the ice Freestyle sessions are limited to the first 25 skaters registered.
        2. First visit to any freestyle session MUST be accompanied by a coach to REVIEW freestyle rules.
        3. PARENTS: Do not “coach” or communicate at doors or through glass. It distracts the skater and is DANGEROUS. Save the discussion for off the ice.
        4. Be courteous to all skaters and coaches. **Remember** most infractions of rules are done by
accident. A friendly and courteous “Excuse me...” works wonders in educating new or inattentive skaters. Apologize if you accidentally interfere with another skater’s practice.
        5. Right of Way priority is as follows:
           A.     Coaches on ice -- Coaches will make all attempts to yield to skaters playing program music. (This is not mandatory.) Skater in a lesson is NOT included.
           B.     Skater playing program music (in lesson or not in lesson.)
           C.     Skater in lesson.
           D.     Skaters practicing moves or dance - since maneuvers have specific patterns.
        6. Skaters practicing their program have the right of way. Please listen & learn what program music sounds like & be prepared to move quickly.
        7. Keep hair tied back for better vision.
        8. Always be aware of what is happening around you. When skating forwards, beware of high level skaters passing close to you at high speeds. Do not change direction without checking behind you.
        9. Respect other’s space. DO NOT skate or jump too close to another skater or coach. DO NOT skate too close to a skater who is spinning.
        10.  Be aware of skaters setting up for jumps or spins and DO NOT cross their path.
        11.  DO NOT practice (spins and crossovers) in the lutz corners. These are all four corners of the ice rink. Lutz's are backward jumps and the skater cannot see to avoid other skaters in these corners. One exception: Skaters who are practicing Preliminary Moves in The Field - Pattern I (Crossovers) may use hockey circles.
       12. KEEP MOVING. If you fall, get up immediately! DO NOT sit on the ice. If you must stop - do so only at the boards (side-walls).
       13. Socializing during freestyle sessions is discouraged for safety reasons. Leave the ice to talk to another skater at length.
       14. When demand for program practice is high, tapes will be put in a line. Music may only be run twice per session unless player is not being used. This includes a skater in a lesson. Skaters with multiple programs may only run two per session unless the tape player is free. Dance music will be run and counted as one program.
       15. NO ONE may stop another skater’s music.
       16. Coaches have priority use of music. When the demand for music high, a coach will play a skater’s program who is not in a lesson.
       17. When music is not being used for programs, tape/CD player may be used for inspirational practice music. However, volume, content and repetition must not be offensive to other skaters or coaches.
        18.  Leave session immediately when over. Do not play Zamboni tag or delay the next class or session.
        19.  All coaches are responsible for monitoring rules and safety on freestyle sessions. All suggestions or reprimands are to be received with sincere respect and courtesy. A skater’s primary coach is not the only coach with authority over a skater. Rules are only to be enforced by coaches- not other skaters.
        20.  Failure to follow rules can result in expulsion from freestyle sessions.

These safety rules and courtesy suggestions are subject to change as the need arises. If there are any questions please discuss them with your primary coach or a member of the coaching staff.
